Music, clowning fills her 2nd journey

HometownLife.com

By Sue Mason
STAFF WRITER

In 2006, Grace Judd gave up her funny clothes and red nose. At the time, she described clowning as her first journey and retirement was her second journey. Little did she know the first would become a part of the second.

A resident at American House on Hunter in Westland, Judd's journey today includes exercising five days a week, walks when the weather's nice, dancing and even slipping on her red nose to join her friends for some clowning.

"It's a journey and life is what you make of it," said Judd. "You can sit and let life go by or you can have fun and make others happy."

At age 94, Judd is showing no sign of slowing down, especially when the music plays.

"When the music starts, my feet start," said Judd. "And I don't need a partner. I tell them to hold my cane, I need to dance."

When a fellow resident asked her to teach her the steps, she tells them she never knows what her feet will do.

Judd's love of dance goes back to parochial school where the sisters would put on a "big revue" to raise money. She was always one of the dancers. She's thankful for that opportunity. Because of them she learned the Charleston, the Irish Jig and the Highland Fling.

"Oh, I love to dance," she said.

Judd admits the transition to assisted living wasn't an easy one. She worried about the other residents liking her and was re-assured by the director who told her that she had "made a big impression" at the facility. It was what she needed to hear. Now, she jokes that they think she's the "cat's pajamas."

She's a night person and doesn't apologize if she sleeps in. After all, it was her mother who told her the best medicine is sleep.

"I've never forgotten that," she said.

And she' not forgotten her clowning. She keeps in touch with her Clowns Around Redford friends, they are her "extended family." Known for 20 years as Dilly the Clown, she still gets together with them on occasion. Last month, she was at Vicky's Homemade Ice Cream in Redford to help make a 50-foot banana split in celebration of National Clowns Week.

"They can't get rid of me, they're stuck with me," Judd said with a laugh.

Even her children have been supportive of her clowning. One daughter thought she was a great clown - again "the cat's pajamas." And they've even learned to call her Dilly. She doesn't answer to mom.

"I say I have a wonderful family and they end up saying they have a pretty wonderful mother," she said. "I must have done something right."

As for clowning, "it's sort of inside me," Judd said.

"Even though I'm retired, sometimes someone says something to me and I come back with a clown answer," she added. "I never know what's going to come out of here (her mouth)."

The Serious Art of Clowning

Branson Daily News

By Chad Hunter
BDN Staff Writer
chunter@bransondailynews.com

A magic kit at age 6 was the catalyst for Ron Retherford’s career in smiles.

Now 48, “Ronzo” makes his living as a balloon-curling clown in Branson.

“I’m going to do this forever,” Retherford said. “To be a clown, you almost have to be born that way. You almost have to be a little off center. I guess it’s in your genes — well, I have overalls on. But, there’s just something about it.”

In character from head to toe, Retherford joined more than 100 other colorful clowns, magicians, mimes and puppeteers over the weekend for a yearly “Clown Jam” gathering in Branson.

The professional event featured contests, vendors and even classes on how to keep — or lose — a straight face.

“Facial expressions are critical,” said class instructor Mark Burgess, a 17-year clowning veteran with his wife, Nettie, who now run Clown ‘N’ Ministry.

And for the thousands of clowns across the country, workshops like Clown Jam keep the performers at the top of their game.

“It’s a wonderful art, and it truly is an art,” said Tom King, president of Clowns of America International. “Clowns today are much better made up and skilled than they were years ago when it comes to small, hometown clowning. But we really lack in the big performance clowning like in the circuses and on stage because everything has turned to smaller venues.”

King points to Branson’s own “clown about town” as a colorful example of modern-day pranksters.

“(Retherford) has put a lot of thought into how he’s put his costume together,” King said. “It’s not just something he went out and bought at a yard sale; he’s got it all tied together, he looks clean, he looks sharp. I know when I’m dressed head to toe, I probably have over $1,000 invested in my outfit.”

Clowning 101

A face painter for 12 years, Vivian “Sugar” McArthur, of Branson, said a love of children is a prerequisite for the job.

“I like the money, but it’s the smile on the kids’ faces,” McArthur said. “When I finish the painting, and they become a princess or a butterfly or a dragon or a cat, when they look into that mirror, that look is my paycheck.”

The former theater major said she “retired from the real world” four years ago.

“It takes a lot of work to be a really good clown,” she said. “You need that innate ability to see things funny through a child’s eyes. You have to just enjoy and love it.”

McArthur’s friend and fellow clown Rose Mangels, who lives at Lake of the Ozarks, said it’s all about feeling young.

“We like to be kids, too. It’s our second chance.”

A ‘yo-yo’ industry

King, a 20-year veteran in the industry, said interest in clowning “yo-yos,” but never dies.

“We’re bigger now than we were in the ‘80s, but probably a bit smaller than we were in the late ‘90s,” he said, adding that his organization alone boasts nearly 6,000 full-time clowns nationwide. “The clown who’s doing it just once in a while for a birthday party or the church, they’re also very important to the art. I don’t think there’s an insignificant clown. I’ve never seen one myself.”

Anyone brave enough to put on the makeup, King said, can make a difference.

“Most clowns clown from the heart,” King said. “It’s not like I was looking for a job and all of a sudden I decided I was going to do that. Most of us stumbled into to it along the line and found we really, really cared. We just want to see people have a little joy in their life and have a smile; make people forget there are problems out there.”

The next generation

A new crop of aspiring clowns is working itself through the ranks.

Two dozen children — including Retherford’s 12-year-old daughter — took part in Clown Jam.

“Samantha’s been doing balloons since she was 3,” Retherford said. “Soon as she can drive, she’s got a way to make extra money and have fun.”

The Reeds Spring student already has a style and persona — “Lollygag.”

“I’ve helped my dad,” she said, adding that one day she looks forward to clowning on her own. “I’m going to wait until I’m like 16, 17 or 18, when I get my driver’s license.”

Novice clown Joshua Hocker, of Little Rock, Ark., was fitted for his first red nose by a vendor on Friday.

“Technically, I’m more of a mime than I am a clown, but I do some clown things,” the 16-year-old said. “It’s more of a hobby to make people laugh.”

A clown ‘til the end

With decades of successful clowning behind him, Retherford — a fixture at Branson Landing — anticipates many more.

“You don’t retire from this,” he said. “I can see myself doing this at like 70-80 years old. I just may slow down a little bit.”

For now, Retherford is juggling a busy schedule, even farming out work when he gets overwhelmed. In addition to his job as a street performer downtown, the Springfield native — self-described as “an uber geek nerd” who loves science fiction — is president of the local clown organization.

“I’ll be down at the landing some times 10 and 12 hours a day doing balloons. Sometimes I’ll have three or four birthday parties in a day’s time,” he said. “I like doing what I’m doing. It’s better than flipping burgers at McDonald’s or something, you know. But I don’t mean to cut down McDonald’s; I don’t want to have that other clown come down on me.”

When it comes to clowns, Heidi Sheputa from Stoughton is no shrinking Violet

The Enterprise
by Paula Chan

Violet the Clown wears a curly violet wig and huge violet shoes, and just in case this isn't sufficient for name-recognition, the word “Violet” appears directly over her giant heart.

Heidi Sheputa, a Stoughton resident and mother of five, has been a full-time professional clown for more than 15 years. This year Violet's family rescheduled her birthday party so she could donate her face-painting and balloon-artistry to Birthday Wishes, a Newton organization that provides birthday parties for homeless children.

“Can I show you one more thing?” Violet asked each child after presenting him or her with a balloon animal. “You can balance it on your nose.”

Violet says she isn't one of those loud, horn-tooting clowns.

CHILDREN'S entertainer Sally Beadle wants to bring a smile to young faces this week by dressing as a clown for the BBC's annual Children in Need appeal.

The 35-year-old mum-of-two will be wearing her Crazy Bananas the clown costume and carrying a small Pudsey Bear mascot, wherever she goes, until Friday night's big fundraising night on television.

Ms Beadle, who recently moved to The Grove in Pott Row from Thurrock in Essex, said her sponsorship money would be split between Children in Need and a local project to provide a new play area for children in Pott Row, Grimston, Congham and Roydon.

"I have a three-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter and they are looking forward to being able to play on the new swings," she said.

Same message, new methods

Kane County Chronicle
by REGAN FOSTER

Debbie George and Karen McCannon, aka JoJo, aren’t afraid to clown around a little bit.

And that’s just fine with the Rev. Steve Good of the United Methodist Church in Sugar Grove.

“We’re always hoping that at least folks who are looking for a church ... will have an avenue, a point of entry,” Good said. “If we can touch someone’s life wherever they’re at, that’s a success.”

Across the nation and in Kane County, Christian leaders are coming up with new and creative ways to teach the gospels and to reach the masses, whether through clowns or rock ‘n’ roll bands. The creative ministries also are a way for church members to use their talents to express and share their faith.

Red Cross clown eases minds of young evacuees

Times Press Recorder

Jan Petring wears a multicolored clown wig with her American Red Cross hat and carries a canvas bag filled with stickers, small plastic figures and, most importantly, face paint.

That might sound like odd equipment for a Red Cross volunteer to carry on relief efforts for victims of the Southern California wildfires.

But her years spent as a kindergarten teacher taught her how children react in disasters and how she can help them recover from the emotionally traumatic experiences of imminent danger, evacuation and, at worst, the loss of their homes or the life of someone close to them.

Jim "Barney" Barnes, 1943-2007: Seafair clown brought joy to the ill, lonely

Seattle P-I
By CASEY MCNERTHNEY

There's a story Patty Shepherd-Barnes loves to share about her husband, Barney. It was about 35 years ago, when he would visit Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, which he did for decades as a Seafair clown.

A young girl was hospitalized, and no matter who tried coaxing her -- doctors, nurses, her parents -- the girl wouldn't speak.

Jim "Barney" Barnes would drive the Seafair clowns' old fire truck to visit her, wearing face paint and his signature orange-and-green cornucopia hat. After weeks of his visits, the girl built trust in Barnes' gentle demeanor and broke her silence by saying she wanted to ring the truck's bell, as he'd offered.

"He wasn't over-the-top aggressive as a clown," said Barnes' stepdaughter, Shannon Hofmeister, adding that the girl later recovered. "He had an amazing way to make people open up on their terms."

Barnes, a 42-year Seafair clown who smiled his way into thousands of Seattleites' memories, died Oct. 1 after a four year battle with cancer. He was 64.

Send in the clown: Rodeo funnyman is there to protect the cowboys and amuse the crowd

Mail Tribune
by CHRIS CONRAD

The secret to effective rodeo clowning is spontaneity.

So says JJ Harrison, a five-year rodeo clown who will put himself in harm's way in the name of comedy at this weekend's Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo held at the Jackson County Fairgrounds.

"Some clowns have big acts prepared," Harrison said. "My deal is to just roll with it. I'm super nervous before each event because I don't plan anything."

Clowns lift spirits with smiles

Beaumont Enterprise
By JANE MCBRIDE

Even on the worst of days, a little clowning around can make everyone smile.

That's why four Southeast Texans don the goofy clothes and paint their faces in bright colors - to bring a little happiness to those who need it.

It's called caring clowns, as opposed to circus, birthday party, or other types of clowning.

It's Pow-Wow weekend

The Chandler & Brownsboro Statesman
By Nathan Straus

Brownsboro Independent School District children were privileged to witness the antics of a Culpepper and Merriweather clown Friday, October 5. The clown, named Skeeter, entertained the students with rope tricks and even handed over two free passes to volunteers for one of her balancing acts.

Jeff Smiley, Chandler and Brownsboro area Chamber of Commerce chair, said he thought the clown was very entertaining.

"One thing that impressed me was the clown incorporated character education into the routine; traits such as listening and self-esteem," Smiley said.

NY Times theater review: "Jump"

Body Blows and Slapstick, With a Side of Ham

New York Times

By JASON ZINOMAN

The Union Square Theater is carving out a niche as a home for a kind of barely verbal foreign import that has become a standard feature of the Off Broadway menu. These high-energy spectacles — the offspring of hits like “Stomp” and “Blue Man Group” — are sometimes called events or experiences, and audiences are usually told that the shows are a sensation somewhere very far away.

"Jump" is playing at the Union Square Theater, 100 East 17th Street, Manhattan; (212) 307-4100.

Reborn as a clown

A Wesley Chapel woman emerges as Patty Cake and studies to be zany.
St. Petersburg Times
By ERIN SULLIVAN

It was 1997 and, Donna Feltner says, her husband of 27 years took off with his new girlfriend and cruised around town on a red Harley-Davidson.

Feltner had just creeped over the edge of 50 and wasn't exactly sure how to go on. Her three sons were grown and starting families of their own. She still ached from the death of a daughter decades earlier.

Feltner had a house in Wesley Chapel. She had a job doing data processing for a technical school in Tampa. But she was sad and lonely.

How do you begin to start over, after a half-century of life, with all that pain and baggage?

Then a guidance counselor at work asked her to go to a clown meeting. It was a group of professional clowns who met, without the makeup, just to hang out.

And a whole new world opened up.

Bonita library celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Bonita Daily News/The Banner
By AARON HALE

The Bonita Springs Public Library was alive with activity Saturday, as it hosted a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with crafts, storytelling and a clown performance.

The library's multicultural program coordinator, Maria Polacio, said Saturday's event was part of an effort to attract the Spanish-speaking population to the library through its celebration of Hispanic culture and traditions. Attendees were encouraged to wear costumes from their native countries.

"We've been celebrating (Hispanic Heritage Month) for years, but we've recently been able to build it up more because we've been able to bring in more talent," Polacio said. The festivities were highlighted by a performance from Galacctín the Clown.

Considering the impressive turnout, Polacio said, Saturday's program was "a resounding success."

Clown Camp opens in Shanghai

cctv

Don't  you just love the Engrish translation .....

There are lots of clowns on TV for arousing gales of laughter. But TV perform their skits and then are gone. In Shanghai people have a chance for a close up look at the clown life. An international Clown Festival is under way in the oriental metropolis, presenting a laugh a minute for the holidays.

More than 100 clowns, from 16 countries like the United States, Canada and France came to turn the holiday into a season of laughter. After a brief opening ceremony, came the rapturous stilt band, the Hunchback of Notre Dame; then the jumping Kangaroo men. The audience response seemed to demonstrate that laughter knows no borders.

A splendid parade afterward brought the audience closer to live performance. Antic movements and facial contortions captured on film become the stuff of memories.

One the spotlight acts in Century Park seemed to beg the question: Who says used bottles and tins are nothing but trash? This female clown turned them into percussion instruments. Have you seen the violin played on two bows? These bows were not really meant for making music. They were props for clever tricks.

The eclectic performance seemed to inspire spectators especially kids, who painted their faces in the clown tradition, adding to the spirit of the fun.

A spectator said, "I'm rather busy and can't wait to take a break for the holidays. And I fell quite relaxed here."

The festival continues for 28 days. There will be some 150 performances.

Thirty great years of clowning around

Birmingham Mail

A CIRCUS clown who has entertained the Pope and Prince Charles is back in Birmingham - 30 years after his debut in the city.

Fips the Clown first came to town at the age of seven when he was known as 'Titch' due to his age and size.

But after decades of performing tricks the entertainer, whose real name is Jan Erik Brenner, will be with the Circus Royale performing in Edgbaston.

Fips, who is from a family of circus performers, said: "I was part of a clowning tradition with my father, but my first public performance was in Birmingham.

Man clowns around, but takes kids' fears seriously

Rochester Democrat & Chronicle
by Deborah Alexander

Pat Donohue's first performance as a clown was at a luncheon for a seniors group at a Buffalo church.

He described his debut, alongside another novice clown, as some of the "worst clowning anyone had ever seen." But the group enjoyed the show. "They laughed no matter what," Donohue said.

His next appearance was before a tougher crowd — a group of 3-year-olds at a Buffalo child care center.

When Donohue walked in, some of the children became frightened and cried.

"I thought there has to be a better way to do this," recalled the now 53-year-old Rochester resident.

Finding a better way to calm the fears and anxieties of children (and some adults) and still entertain has become the hallmark of Donohue's 32-year career as a clown.

Instead of coming out in clown makeup and costume, Donohue first appears as "a regular dad" in jeans, polo shirt and sneakers. As he talks to the audience and tells jokes, he transforms into Mr. Beau. He has started each performance the same way for the last 27 years.

Clown celebrating 40 years in rodeo business

Harrison Daily Times
By JAMES L. WHITE

Staff Photo/James L. White When Jim Bob Feller, 56, was a boy, his father was a preacher, so the family moved around a lot.

As such, he didn't get to settle in to many places and hadn't really even seen a rodeo when his grandfather gave him a wood carving when the boy was just six years old.

That carving, Feller said, showed a rodeo scene featuring a clown. He felt a calling.

On Location: TBWA/Chiat/Day, L.A. in Mexico City

 Creativity On-Line

There were a bunch of clown doctors that showed up on the shoot at one point, doctors dressed as clowns. One is a dwarf with a red cape on, they're calling her Capa Rosa, she's dressed like Little Red Riding Hood. She's a clown, plus she's a doctor. And she also happens to be a dwarf. They just walk around Mexico City, they're just crazy doctors dressed like clowns to cheer up dying kids. And then you're supposed to have complete faith in them. Think Patch Adams meets Traffic. That's probably a good theme for the whole thing. We were sick, we behaved like children. I don't know if they were trying to cheer us up, but Capa Rosa was wonderful, she was sweet. They came in a big ambulance and just hung out around us. There was a fire-breathing clown right around when that happened. He was conducting traffic.

Send up the clowns

The Age

Derek Ives loves the idea of a bottomless Bucket of Love, says Fiona Scott-Norman.

HOW can you tell when it's time to step up to the next level? Maybe when your mum buys you long pants, perhaps when you're lapping your peer group in the pool, definitely when the world is going to climate-change hell and you're running a country. Performers can often tell when it's time to step up and do their first solo show when the voices in their head won't stop shouting at them.

Derek Ives, one of Melbourne's most interesting physical performers, is about to do his first solo show at Melbourne Fringe. It's a clowning show called Bucket of Love, directed by Azaria Universe, and, according to Ives, the impulse to finally go it alone was overwhelming.

Obituary: Bip

There were many obituaries on Marcel Marceau and it would have taken forever to post them all, but this one was particularly compelling to me as it focused on his clown-ness .....

The Economist

WHEN the spotlight faded on Bip last week, leaving not even a hand or a flower illuminated, it caused only a sigh of surprise. Bip had tried many times to put an end to himself. He would cut his wrists with a blade, nicking and wincing away from it, in case his copious blood gushed over his pure white sailor's trousers. He would shake out into his palm a handful of pills from a bottle, open his wide red mouth, and fail to swallow them. Stepping on a chair that wobbled under him, he would knot a noose round his scrawny neck, test it, yank it, gyrate his neck like a pigeon and step out into the void. Nothing worked. He went on living.

The book is available on order through bookshops and online stores in New Zealand, Australia, America and England.

"Clown is a fascinating, diverse, complex and exciting art form, which has existed around the planet for thousands of years. Like any art form it has to evolve to stay relevant to the culture nurturing it, and at the same time, and by its very nature, clown teases and turns upside down the cultural patterns and boundaries around us."

The power of Flower

News Herald

(Northeast Ohio)

Wickliffe's Ron Flower - the Flower Clown - brings smiles to young and old around the globe

http://flowerclown.com "There are clowns - and then there's you."

That's what event officials thousands of miles away in the United Arab Emirates told funnyman Ron Fowler of Wickliffe when they hired him to clown around at the 2007 Dubai Summer Surprise citywide festival.
Fowler, aka Flower Clown, is an upbeat, animated, friendly guy whose success as an entertainer has spread from local gigs to those around the globe.

Fowler, 38, claims to have been somewhat shy in earlier years, but after transforming his appearance with colorful makeup and the bright clothing of a modern-day jester, another personality blossomed.
"I'm a totally different person," he said. "When I put the costume on, I can talk to anyone. I'm dressed up, and no one knows who I am."

International commercial photographer Herb Ascherman chose Fowler to be included in his exhibit of "100 Most Odd and Interesting People," on display at Cleveland's Western Reserve Historical Society.

"Not only is he a master craftsman at what he does, he's an international ambassador," Ascherman said. "His personality, his demeanor made him worthy of being in this project. He lives a good life and devotes himself to uplifting the human condition. His character and attributes far belie his comic exterior."

Theatre review: A few clowns weaken spell of magician's tutelage

You see, there was this guy strolling across the parking lot who didn't look much like a patient, and he certainly didn't look like a doctor. He was wearing rabbit ears, brightly-colored clothes and a big, red nose, and he had gadgets and widgets popping out from his body in a number of different directions.

The guy looked like a real clown!

Has America Forgotten It’s Famous Clown?

The Final Taxi

Funny how you can go to a doctor’s offices and find magazines that are years old in the lobby. I had to go to a dentist two week ago and found a Golf magazine from the 80’s. I also found a magazine that told me the following story:

Decades ago, a young American was flying across the mountain ranges of Europe on his way to London. Accompanying his friend, a Catholic priest, the two were scheduled to have a meeting with the Pope in England. As the priest talked, the plane suddenly rocked. Then rocked again.
Something told the priest the plane was not destined to ever touch
land again.

The passengers, busy in their individual conversations, failed to notice, the priest observed, until a flight attendant made an announcement of impending doom. The plane was over a mountain range and losing altitude.

As expected, panic set in.

Clowning around with car

Community Press

ALEXANDRIA - People laugh and point at Tim Schweitzer as he drives by in his 1951 Crosley station wagon, so he turned it into a clown car for Alexandria's fair parade.

Schweitzer, 45, of Claryville, restored the Cincinnati company's classic car back to road-worthiness in 2006. The car is about twice the size of a refrigerator. It's difficult to discern when the car's four-cylinder, 26-horse power engine is idling or turned off.

"They just think it's so cute," Schweitzer said. "You go down the road and they're pointing and laughing, and that's when I thought of the clown outfit. I thought 'That will give them something to laugh about.'"

Schweitzer dressed up as a clown for the Alexandria fair parade, and also stuck a mock wind-up key on the back of the car.

He has a custom made bumper sticker on the back stating "If you can't run with the big dogs. Follow me."

Many people often mistake it for a foreign car, and don't realize it was made by Cincinnati inventor and entrepreneur Powel Crosley Jr., Schweitzer said.

Crosley built radios and refrigerators starting in the 1920s, owned Cincinnati radio and television stations, and the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. He made his own line of ultra-compact cars from 1939-52.

"It's just so nice to be able to drive a piece of history," Schweitzer said.

Schweitzer's father bought the car in 2005 in Norwood, where it had mostly sat in a garage since 1965.

Tim has a history of tinkering with cars, said his father, Jim Schweitzer, of Wilder.

"He's a heck of a mechanic," Jim said of Tim. "He can fix anything."

Tim built a go-cart from scratch, including the motor, when he was 14, and hasn't stopped since, said his father.

"It was a bucket of rust when he got it, but it's all new now."

Singing clown wants to participate in Eurosong with parrots

oikotimes.com

In Flanders Argo, a singing clown, wants to participate in Eurosong 08 'with a super-song and... my parrots', Argo says in an interview with Eurosong.be. The clown likes to take his chance but he doesn't know if it's allowed that one can take part with animals. Argo is a singing clown. He also has an act with parrots. As a Eurovision fan he wants to participate now in the Flemish preselection.

'Lately we have talked it over with my management. Now we have decided to take our chance', Argo tells Eurosong.be. As a clown he doesn't have to work on a special act to draw the attention of the audience, because he's a remarkable act on himself. But on stage Argo is accompanied by parrots. 'One of my parrots even sings a schlagerhit. If he's singing out of tone he corrects himself. We are often joking that he's singing better than some real artists', Argo says.

The key question is that animals are allowed to participate in Eurosong and the Eurovision Songcontest? 'I don't know', says Argo. 'We have to ask the question to national broadcaster Eén.' In case the parrots can take part in Eurosong, will the animals be kept under control? No problem if we may believe Argo: 'My parrots will not be afraid of camera's. They love to receive applause. They will stay where they are and they'll do what they are trained for.'

Is this a pretty rough translation, or is it me?

No more clowning on Alberta Street

The Oregonian

By VANESSA NIX

Soon the crazy array of tall bikes, fire displays and clown sightings on Alberta will be a thing of the past. After six years, the Clown House at Northeast Alberta Street and 25th Avenue is closing.

The clowns, including ringleader Dingo Dizmal (aka A.A. Munson) and his wife, Caffeine Jones, are "scattering to the four winds," Dizmal says, because of a rent hike.

"We stayed a year longer than we could afford to, using up our savings because we loved this place so much. . . . But my wife and I are also glad to be going -- it's a huge proprietary role -- not to just have the show and save the world, but raising little kids and making a living is really hard," Dizmal, a father of two, says.

The world's a stage for performer

Daily Herald

You've seen them before, at Elgin's Fourth of July Parade, and several others.

The black gorilla carrying a cage with the yelling man inside. Or the colorful clown who walks on his hands.

Perhaps they made you laugh or freaked you out -- maybe both.

But chances are, you didn't forget them.

These are two of the characters affiliated with Tricky Business Entertainment, which owner Don "Wand" Bothwell operates out the Elgin home he shares with his wife, Gisela, and three of his seven children.

Bothwell, a local magician, and clown -- he plays Tricky the Clown -- says television shows from the days of yore inspired him become an entertainer.

Clown's faith calms circus

This is a story about Bello Nock, the famous clown and star of the Ringling Bros.-Barnum & Bailey Circus, and his family. I interviewed him a couple of years ago. He comes from a long line of clowns and circus performers and has amazing clown hair.

Tale of Holocaust clown coming to big screen

Mail and Guardian Sun, 29 Jul 2007 0:41 AM PDT
German and Israeli filmmakers have come together to tackle the subject of the Holocaust for the first time in an ambitious screen adaptation of a bestselling novel.

Adam Resurrected, based on a darkly comic 1969 novel by popular Israeli author Yoram Kaniuk, tells the story of Adam Stein, a Jewish-German clown who is forced to entertain inmates in a Nazi concentration camp. His life is spared only because he plays his violin for the prisoners being sent to the gas chamber.

Jeff Goldblum is to play the part of Adam, while Willem Dafoe will play the concentration camp commandant who forces him to act like a dog. Goldblum has described it as "the most difficult role I have ever had to play". Directed by Paul Schrader, who is best known for his screenplay for Taxi Driver, and produced by the Israeli Ehud Bleiberg and the German Werner Wirsing, the harrowing film has been compared to Roberto Benigni's Oscar-winning Holocaust "black comedy" Life Is Beautiful.

Clown Freaks: Celebrating music, face paint and flavored soda

The Southern Illinoisan Fri, 13 Jul 2007 11:34 AM PDT
Quote clarified: In Wednesday's story, No clowning around: Church hopes to stop the insanity, Greg Degrave's quote was taken out of context. To clarify, Degrave was reading an excerpt from a July 5 comment left on the Southern Illinoisan's Web site when he used the term clown freaks. Degrave did not personally refer to anyone by that term but was reading from a reader comment.

Click on "Continue reading" below to get the original story. It's a nice little drama between Christian Conservatives and Juggaloes. Though it's not very well written, but I do like the final comment by Marty Kaylor, whoever he is.

Personally, I'm not an ICP fan. What I've heard of them is totally vulgar, not my idea of clown at all, and I don't intend to post about them, but some of the quotes in this are pretty funny. If you're interested in reading more, though, there are stories leading up to this meeting. Some of the comments are innaresting, too. This town is fired up and the Juggalos are standing their ground:

June 26: Church leaders want concert to go away

June 27: ICP fans take issue with Alliance's claims
